Over the years, many of us on the list had been close to him and have benefited from his vast knowledge and infinite patience. Here is a nicely prepared obituary, forwarded to me by one of his last Ph.D. students, Carl Muller, who lived close to Earl and who remained in touch with him throughout his last difficult years. Those of you who live in or near the Bay Area should consider attending the memorial service at Stanford on Jan. 14. He was 83 years old. Earl was born on a farm in Ohio and spent his early boyhood in an orphanage. Music grabbed his attention in high school and continued (with tennis) to hold his attention at Manchester College in North Manchester, Indiana, where he graduated in 1938 with majors in music and math. He began his teaching career with high school math while also directing the band. He did a year of graduate school at the University of Iowa but returned to high school teaching one more year in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He then went back to graduate school at Iowa while playing bass fiddle in the University Symphony Orchestra. In 1942 he received a Master's degree in Music under Arnold Small, Sr., and Carl Seashore. He was drafted into the Army and served on Detached Service to the Signal Corps under Don Lewis, who persuaded him to shift graduate school emphasis to experimental psychology with an emphasis in audition. After his discharge in 1946, he returned to Iowa and, together with his new wife Mid, solved the housing shortage by acting as houseparents for 30 speech- and hearing-handicapped boys. He continued graduate work at Iowa under Don Lewis, Gustav Bergmann, and Kenneth Spence, receiving his Ph.D. in 1948. His first academic position was at the University of Michigan through 1951 and he returned to the University of Iowa for four years after that. In 1955 he became the Research Director of the Cleveland Hearing and Speech Center at Western Reserve University where he remained until 1960. His next position was at Indiana University for four years. In the midst of that period, he spent a summer session at Stanford University and that helped draw him to Stanford in 1964. He continued at Stanford through and beyond his official retirement in 1987. Prior to his retirement, he was at the Medical School in the Program of Hearing and Speech Sciences where he directed research and students in a wide variety of studies. After his retirement, he volunteered his energy and knowledge to students and research at Stanford's Center for Computer Research in Music & Acoustics (CCRMA). Earl is survived by his wife Mildred, two children, and several grandchildren. A memorial service will take place on Friday, January 14, 2000 at 11 am in Memorial Church at Stanford University, Stanford, California. [ Prepared by Carl Müller (Muller@CCRMA.Stanford.EDU) ]
